Today was the start of our Svalbard cruise. Firstly we flew by charter flight to Svarlbard. This was our first sight of the island
Then a great view of the town of Longyearbyen and our Quark cruise ship on final approach
3 degrees C on landing..,
…quite a modern terminal
The town layout
Just in case we were lost! - note the latitude
Our cruise ship at anchor
The global seed vault is here. 1.2 million varieties of seed in storage
A big part of the history is coal mining - this sculpture a testimony to that era
Walking the main road
The local museum
Lots of skidoos and mining remnants
Old mine cable towers on the hillsides
Barnacle geese
Our rather spacious cabin
We set sail around 6 pm with the following projected route
