The last word

Woke to anther spectacular morning on our second day at LUX le Morne..

...so decided to go on another snorkelling trip. Got a few OK photos. This puffer fish...

...and a fire scallop....

...plus a pair of yellow spotted filefish.

That was our last day there. In an effort to see the island we decided to drive up the east coast, to north of the capital Port Louis, to the Trou aux Biches area. We ended up booking Le Meridien Il Maurice, expecting it to be fairly good.

Anyway, on the way we stopped at Tamarind Bay, one of Mauritius's most well known surf spots.
It was flat as a tack, the break is at the extreme right, over the boat, about 6 inch sets! Amazingly there were 2 guys sitting out there.

Next it was Flic en Flac, a popular spot with tourists. It didn't really grab us.

We passed a number of Hindu temples....

...had lunch at a beach shack in Grand Baies, arguably the most upmarket part of Mauritius. Again, it didn't really appeal. A lot of the bay is cut off by waterfront properties and the public beach wasn't much.

So it was on to Le Meridien. This is a huge resort, stretching along 1.1 km of seafrontage. However it is quite tired and not a patch on the LUX. Maybe we had been a bit spoilt.

The breakfast area was nice enough...

...and the room quite a large ground floor suite facing the ocean. The backdrop as usual is lovely, from the land...

..and the sea..

...and we went on a nice snorkelling trip outside the reef..

...but it feels like we are slumming it a bit. We checked Trip Advisor for restaurant tips outside and the #  7 out of 650 odd places in Mauritius was just up the road. It was called Cabane du Filao, completely unlikely looking...

...but run by lovely people who served us really excellent food under the casuarinas at the back of the beach. It was marinated and dusted calamari with paratha, two veggie dishes, homemade mango pickle and chilli.

So that's it for this trip. Tomorrow we head home via Perth.
