Athens - day 2

We started the day with a "free" walking tour of Athens. After Syntagma Square and the main shopping area, we focussed mainly on the area around the Acropolis. We headed through the Monastiraki district....

..passed the Tower of the Winds, an ancient wind vane, with sundials, and a planetary motion predictor...

...up along side of the Acropolis hill...

..to the Roman Forum...

..and the Greek agora, with its 5th century Byzantine church, the oldest church in Athens...

..and Temple of Hephaistos...

..to Pnika Hill with good views of the Acropolis itself.

Then it was lunch in the Plaka, gemista (stuffed capsicums) and roast lamb.

After our afternoon break it was back out to the Monistiraki/downtown area. We walked passed Athens cathedral.

And another Byzantine church, this one 12th century.

The sales were pretty amazing so lots of loot was obtained. We then returned to our terrace for early evening beers...

..and some great Greek take-away food (well the backdrop of the Acropolis is the main feature)

Tomorrow we at off to Hydra - can't wait.
