Peniche

We had hired a car for our trip and the first leg was to drive the coastal/secondary roads to Peniche.

We stopped at Ericeira for lunch, a lovely town and a world surfing reserve…

… with a cleverly logo-ed surf shop

We spent 3 nights in Peniche.

Its main attractions depicted in tile work - what else!

We explored the peninsula, with its seafront dominated by the old fort

Plenty to observe wandering the old town streets

A visit to the municipal market

Tile fronted houses and more seafront in the Visconde sector…

A coffee stop

A trip to the beach at Baleal

Pre dinner drinks on our terrace

Out to dinner - octopus of course

A day trip out to the Berlengas Islands, about 10 km off the coast.

Cape carvoeiro and Nau dos Carvos rock pillar

Berlengas port

A tectonic plate shift chasm with an ever present Atlantic yellow legged gull

Still operating lighthouse

And the “piece de resistance” - S João Batista Fort…

… with a very step climb down

Endlessly photogenic

The visit capped off with a boat ride around the caves

Elephant drinking rock

Coloured rocks

Then on Sunday night it was the final of the Portugal football cup and there was a big screen set up in the square next to our apartment. Went down for a couple of beers and a traditional bifana - a big Portuguese bun with meat topped with mayonnaise and piri piri sauce. Unfortunately the local team lost.
