Another day, another trip. This time we head to the Seychelles to join a Ponant cruise from there to Zanzibar, then fly up to the game areas in Tanzania before flying to Nairobi for a few days.
Our flight from Sydney to Mahe Island in the Seychelles with Emirates required an overnight stop in Dubai and we were treated to great sunset views over the city from the roof of our hotel near the airport.
It was then on to Mahe in the Seychelles….
… and our accommodation in the south of the island at Flora’s Self Catering Apartments (the blue dot)
Our first outing was to the capital of the Seychelles,Victoria, with some great views en route as we drove over the spine of the island.
We wandered the streets, checked out the markets, the buildings, the National History Museum and the Botanic Gardens
Seychelles history museum
A reflective historical painting from the museum. The islands were uninhabited til 1770, when the French established a small colony. The British took over not long after and the islands were typically occupied by small numbers of British and lots of slaves. Slaves typically made up 80 to 90
percent of the population.
Lunch
Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica) at the Botanic Gardens is the world's largest, heaviest seed, endemic to the Seychelles. Famous for its unique, buttock-like shape (earning it the nickname "love nut"), this rare, protected species takes 6–7 years to mature and can weigh over 40 kg (88 lbs).
It was then on to the most popular beach area Beau Vallon
Drinks at the Beach Shack - a bit of an icon at Beau Vallon
Finally a drive right around the top of the island and back home for a swim at our local beach at Anse a la Mouche…
.. with plenty of visits from the highly coloured fody or cardinal birds
