Camino del Norte - Day 1 - San Sebastián to Zarautz - 23 km

Extreme weather was forecast for the start of our walk, 37 degrees. We felt an early start was mandatory so it was up at 5:30 and away before sunrise.

The track was initially well shaded...

...and well signposted..

We went past some lovely Basque farmhouses

Then broke out to coastal views

As the temperature rose we appreciated all the water supplies

Plus appreciated the occasional touch of humour

First major village was Orio, a port town where we stopped for Credential stamps and head ducking under the water tap

The town had some character

...but was essentially a working port.

We left about 11:30, and although we only had 6 Kms to go, it was a sealed road walk with blazing sun. It was punishing out there, but I guess the txikoli grapes didn't mind.

After only 3 km of this, but with a 100 m elevation climb we had to stop. Found a bar with a 10 € menu del dia and settled in for 3 courses, sidre, the local naturally fermented and unsweetened cider, an acquired taste, plus of course some beers and lots of iced water

After lunch it was 3 km downhill thankfully into the seaside town of Zarautz.

Fortunately we had decided on a cheap hotel here rather than an albergue, so for 2 hours after arriving it was cold showers and siesta in the room with the a/c on full.

Zarautz turned out to be quite a quaint town.

Thou they were very keen to make sure you knew where you were.

The big attraction for the day though was the beach.

There was quite a food scene as well. After some indecision we settled on pintxos/dinner at Txikipolit.
