Staying local

After a strenuous days walking yesterday we decided to limit things today, heading to Cerne Abbas, to see "The Giant" and visit the claimed prettiest village in Dorset.

The Giant is a 55m high carving in a limestone hill, well introduced from a viewpoint opposite..

...with this actual view..

..and this view if you happen to be able to get an aerial shot from an aircraft, or these days a drone.

Its origins and meaning are somewhat clouded, but one populat theory is it dates from Roman times and is a fertility symbol.

Be that as it may, the town does live up to its reputation, with quaint houses..

...lovely hanging flower baskets...

...an old timber barrelled canon

..an Abbey and Norman church..

..and several pubs, including the appropriately named Giant Inn.

We chose to eat at the Royal Oak..

..and being pretty happy with our ploughman's...

...and faggots

We headed back to the farm for our first ever experience of clay pigeon shooting, ably guided by our host David

It took some time to get the hang of it, but eventually we got into the swing of it and "bagged a few consistently. A lot of fun, and enough success for a satisfied smile the end.

David turned out to be quite a complex character as her gave us the farm tour. He had a tree change after running a successful glass blowing business in Harrow. He supplied lots of glassware to the Middle East and high street retailers. The Royal Family has some of his pieces...

..and still tinkered in the field

He also made his own wines..

..and distilled some to make brandy, which we sampled from one of his handmade pipes

He also smoked his own ham and bacon in a homemade smoker

Feeling somewhat inadequate, we retired to our cottage for G&Ts and dinner.
