Hell-Ville

Not it's not named literally, but after a former French governor, Admiral de Hell. In any case it is the main city on Nosy Be island ( make that the only city). The owners of Gite Guyan, Guy from France and Anika from Madagascar, were going in by their boat for their weekly shop and offered us a free ride there and back to do some exploring.

We took up the offer, landing back at the Petit Port, and walking into the main part of town.

We were greeted by this welcome sign

And walked past the prison, reportedly the oldest building on the island dating from 1856

First stop however was Oasis Restaurant for great juices, pastries and coffee, although the free high speed Internet seemed more important for a while

Then it was off to the covered market in the Main Street, lots of colour and smells as you can imagine

Then it was down to the open market on the harbour, it was really bustling

Some photogenic locals as well

Does this bring a new meaning to "killer heels"

There were lots of colourful boats in the port as well

Couldn't pass up a visit to the supermarche, great flowers

There were several "upmarket" eateries, this being one we visited

We had planned to eat in town, but Guy announced that his chef had sourced some of the big razor clams we had asked about and was cooking them for lunch.

These were the shells along the beach from the Gite that got us curious

And this is what it was presented

...and yes, plenty of beer was being consumed!

In the pm we went for a stroll through and beyond the village we were staying in. We saw our first zebu...

...a soccer game..

... met plenty of kids...

...and saw our first of many "roi des oiseaux" as they are known here - better that than drongo!
