We waited another couple of hours then decided to drive down the mountain to see if the weather was better, and it was.
We crossed the Plaine de Sable (sand plain)
And visited the town of Bourg Murat, alas it was wet and miserable, so we returned to medium elevation where it was fine and we got some good views of Piton des Neiges above the cloud. This is the highest mountain on Reunion at just over 3000m.
We also did a small walk along a trail called La Rivière des Ramparts, quite pleasant it was as well until the rain and mist caught us again.
We then noticed it clear above us so drove to the outer rim of the volcano and got some views! It turned out it was out of the cloud for 2 hrs only.
We did a short walk around the rim of the crater before it closed in.
Then it was back to the Gite du Volcan for dinner.
