Porthgain has a long history, mainly based on brick making and quarrying. The scale of industrialisation was quite impressive.
These sites are still very evident, but now in a state of ruin.
We had good views back over the town and harbour as we climbed up out of the port area..
The excellent coastal scenery started almost immediately
With lots of wildflowers about, we decided on a mini project to identify as many as we could. Some of the common or notable are thrown in amoungst the general walk photos, eg yarrow..
..and deadly nightshade.
Most of the beaches below the cliffs are inaccessible by land, so when we saw these steps down...
..we had to go down.
Meanwhile, we saw a different butterfly, a red admiral..
..plus foxglove...
..and spotted orchid.
We rounded another headland, and reached the tidal pool, an old quarry..
...next to Abereiddi beach.
We had ice creams at the beach, and saw these locals heading out for a swim ....... in their Welsh bikinis!!
It was then back through the fields to Porthgain for lunch at The Sloop Inn, built in 1746...
...it was cockles, bacon, laver bread and leek gratin with bread and salad for the boys..
We then headed out for Aber Draw..
...passing mature wheat fields...
..and some more flowers, including birds feet trefoil..
...scarlet pimpernel..
...knapweed...
..dog rose with a solitary wasp..
