Paris - Day 4

We did another long walk around the city today. First stop was Bastille markets which, fortunately, still carry on during the summer.

It was bustling with locals out buying provisions, and why not with these breads...

...cheeses...

...pâtés...

...and fish.

We then walked in to Place des Vosques..

...up to Canal Saint Martin, but being Sunday it was again very quiet.

We headed over the railway tracks going into the huge Gare de  l'Est..

..Opera.

Galleries Lafayette was of course closed so we wove our way back through side streets, finding this lovely little park...

..and watching a 10 piece string ensemble just behind the Palais Royal.

In the evening we went on a walking tour of Monmatre, starting in Pigalle opposite the Moulin Rouge.

We climbed up through the streets towards Sacre Coeur, with tales of prostitutes, artists and food/drink. Here are some locals partaking of the last of these.

Monmatre is now one of Paris's most expensive areas for housing. street scenes like this make you understand this.

Sacre Coeur was busy as usual..

..with the posters on display everywhere..

..and crepes being prepared at every turn.

We chose to eat just out of the main tourist area...

..and it was moule frites all round...

..with music provided by travelling buskers.

Even the locals were keen to get involved.
