Gyangste to Lhasa (3660 m)

We left Gyangtse about 12 pm heading for Lhasa.

We drove up another barren river valley...

..and past a large hydro dam with an old island fortress...

..and isolated villages.

Some ladies stopped us and solid us some (rock hard) dried cheese.

We passed nearby the 7000 m Nochim Kansang mountain

..and a large glacier...

..before stopping in Nakarte for lunch. The hawkers were waiting for us.

The houses were again slightly different, with yak dung patties on many walls. Put there to dry.

We drove along Lake Yamdrok, getting some fine views as we ultimately climbed above it...

..before topping our last pass and dropping down to the Brahmaputra river valley.

It was then a flat drive along the river to Lhasa, although we went through a series of tunnels. One new feature was ladders drawn on the rocks. These are there to signify the way to heaven.

We pulled in to the well appointed Tibet Gang- gyan Lhasa Hotel, on the edge of the old town. Much of the city has been rebuilt and is now very Chinese in character.

We were on a busy street, with Potala a Palace standing as a backdrop to the traffic.

From here we walked to the well reputed Snowlands restaurant, passing Lhasa's Times Square on the way

After dinner a few of us walked to the palace for nighttime illumination photos
