Day 3 En route to Macquarie Island aka MACA

Today is a sea day heading south to Macquarie Island. A number of lectures on the history of the island and biosecurity briefings. Essentially discovered by sealers whom went in and wiped out the seal population before starting on the penguins, boiling them down for oil. Fortunately this was eventually banned and it is now a fully protected UNESCO World Heritage site with all the introduced goats, cats, rabbits, rats and mice now eradicated and rehabilitation well advanced.

Turned out to be a lovely sunny day, with a number of wandering albatross sightings from the boat (iPhone photos only unfortunately)…

….and beef ramen for lunch on the outside deck

Otherwise, it was presentations on Macquarie Island landings and the diversity of wildlife we could expect to encounter….

…and food, food, food, with the odd drink thrown in! Afternoon tea……

…evening gala dinner dessert

..then a nightcap in the lounge listening to Lotte and Tim doing a Motown session
