Tanzania safari - Day 3 - Serengeti Day 1

Today we headed out to the Serengeti. We had to travel the same road we went Ngorogoro but then went further on to the the NW.

We passed the newly planted maize fields in the amazing red earth so typical of the Karatu area

Went through the main entry gates again

Did a photo stop at the crater view point

Then headed NW towards the Serengeti NP. We passed through Masai territory

A new type of thorn bush

Young Masai herders

Masai selling honey by the road

Sisal plant

Typical landscape

And made a stop at Olduvai Gorge, one of the most the known archeological sites in the world and where the Leaky team discovered the skull of Homo Habilis, amongst hundreds of other artifacts. It is still the site of a number of ongoing digs

There were also lots of agama lizards and some colourful birds there

Widow bird

Masked weaver

This leopard tortoise held us up as we headed out

And soon we left the Ngorongoro Conservation area

And entered the Serengeti NP

That’s when the sightings came thick and fast. Photos mainly of new things. We omitted the thousands of widerbeast, zebras, gazelles, etc

A tawny eagle

The endless Serengeti plain
