Tanzania safari - Day 6 - Ndutu area - Day 1

No internet for 3 days so a bit of catching up.

Today we drove south, heading for the southern part of the Serengeti and Ndutu Wilderness Camp.

We were heading there to see the southern part of the migration.  The migration is really a continuous loop taking one year and covering 2200 km. The famous part of the migration is when the herds are crossing the river in the north heading for the Masai Mara in Kenya and crossing the crocodile infested waters. This occurs in Aug/Sep. in February the herds are in the south giving birth. There are about 3 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra undertaking this ongoing migration and every year about 500,000 wildebeest are born with half not making it back to the south where they were born due to predation.

There was lots to see as we drove down to the Ndutu turn off. A hornbill

A king fisher

A grey backed jackal

Lots of vultures

Then we hit the migrating animals. It was mind blowing. Impossible to photograph to give a feeling of numbers but our guide estimates 750,000 wildebeest and 100,000 zebra.

And a video

An attempt to show the numbers

A very poor photo of out first cheetah sighting

A young wildebeest

The turn to Ndutu

A red billed stork

More of the migrating animals

Hazard ahead

Agree like any other..

.. but more to eagle eyed guides

And then the word got out!!
