This morning we picked up our X Trail hire car and headed out of Tallinn making for Saaremaa Island via Haapsalu
The countryside was very flat but also very green. It fluctuated between meadows and pine forests. We also passed rustic farm buildings and piles of lumber from the logging of the forests. After a couple of hours we arrived in Haapsalu driving down its colourful main street lined with cafes
We explored the 13th century episcopal castle (or Bishops castle)….
…… then wandered through town down to the harbour. There were lots of fascinating old timber houses in the old town, such as this one….
… and the harbour area had lots of birds. Swans of course
A great crested grebe with its catch
Black headed gulls
Then it was on to Saaremaa island. A 30 min ferry ride from
Virtsu on the mainland to Muhu island…
…then across a causeway to Saaremaa (not our photo of course)
We are staying in farm cottages at Just Lodges near Orissaare on the east of the island
Great hosts - Scottish chef Julien and his Estonian wife Ulna do amazing pizzas (and Prosecco). The
open air “restaurant”
