Only a short drive to Riga today but several stops along the way
Firstly the archaeological site at Araisi where a 9th tom10th century lake fortress had been excavated and later recreated
They also had some Stone Age recreations after a short walk through a lovely meadow
Then Ligatnes, a small village by a lovely pond with storage caves cut into the sandstone cliff - one at least 30 m long with side chambers
A typical driving scene in rural Latvia (and Estonia for that matter). Forest lining both sides of the roads
Next the two castles at Siguldas
The new castle built in the 1880s
Baked Camembert on nachos for a decadent lunch
The old 12th century Livonian castle and a representation of its original design
A large manor across the gorge with a cable car en route
Eventually we arrived in Riga and headed out on an evening old town guided walk
Plenty of street scenery - this by a recreation of the old city wall
By the ghost legend
Just liked the paintings on the shutters
A street scene
The “three brothers ” - houses from different centuries and in different styles - Gothic, Dutch mannerism and baroque. The earliest built in the 15th century
One of the many large squares
The cathedral
The reconstructed House of the Blackheads ( an association of unmarried bachelor traders)
St James church - the highest spire in Riga
Symbolic sculpture of brothers Grimm animals breaking through the iron curtain
St James church tower from what was claimed to be the most photographed angle in Riga
The freedom monument
