Today was a 40 km stretch, but there was never any intention to walk it all. The guidebooks suggest the walk out of Santander, through urban and industrial areas is not worth it. We therefore got the train to Mogro.
All day we were walking on sealed roads, mostly minor but still hard under foot. We started on quite nice rural roads...
...with the occasional onlooker, and Mark going high vis...
...through a pretty un appealing industrial town...
...holding nothing back...
...but with good way marking..
..and we finished up with nice countryside, with traditional techniques, and some renovators delights.
Santillana came as real shock. An anomaly in the midst of ordinary, and a real tourist town.
Still, we took advantage of the tavernas..
..and the background music.
..glad to be rid of these for a while.
There were lots of photo opportunities around the town.
..including touristy ones.
We were booked in to Hostal Solar de Hildagos, just like a museum
In the afternoon we visited the Caves of Altimara, site of some of the oldest cave paintings in the world, estimated to be approximately 36,000 years old. The actual cave is being affected by human visitation so they have created a museum and full size replica. Here is one of the best artworks.
