Camino del Norte - Day 17 - Ribadesella

A day off again waiting for Meg and Mark. We had a leisurely start to the day then went exploring the town. We are in the old town, right behind the "i" sign at the RH side of the bridge, which typically has lots of character...

...and churches. This is the most significant, Inglesia Parroquial de Sta, Maria Magdelena..

...with an impressive muralled interior dome.

We then walked around the river walk to the sea. They had murals of the history of the town, this being the last in the series of six...modern times.

There were nice fountains...

...and fishing boats returning to port.

The objective though was the 16 th century Ermita del Guia...

...from where there were excellent views back over the town. This is the ocean beach, again lots of learn to surf schools

The main town side with the mountains, aka the Picos de Europa.

On the way back we walked past this shop with carrot cake. Irresistible!!

It warmed up nicely by midday so we got some supplies from the supermarket and went to the beach for a picnic and a swim.

We also got a close up look at some of the grand old homes along the beachfront. This one was the stand- out, built in 1910, about the same time as our house in Manly.

Meg and Mark arrived about 3:30 pm and met us at the beach. After the compulsory cerveza rehydration it was late siesta then out to dinner in the old town. We went to well recommended Meson de Ana - and yes we were the first to arrive - again!!

We had some "sidre" to start, the local un-carbonated cider poured from some height with a practiced arm to enliven it..

Mark took on the challenge of the local cachopo...a stuffed schnittie...

...which, even with the help of three friends, couldn't be finished.
