Wiltshire mini-tour

It was shopping for the girls and a crop circle oriented mini-tour of the surrounding area. Paul Cariou was the tour guide, and we were fully kitted with his drone mounted Go-Pro.

First stop was quite a recent formation, not far from Uffcott. We pulled up near the Crop Circle Mobile unit, part of a group that works with farmers and co-ordinates visits - including the £3 to visit - all going to charity.

We then set up the drone and set it loose.

It took off at quite a rate...

...sending back amazing video...

..until all was revealed.

Quite an amazing piece of equipment, controllable up to a mile high and in any direction, plus with built in homing GPS should it lose signal, or batteries get below a certain level. If you think you would like one though, you don't get any change out of £1000.

At this stage we expected to film for ten minutes or so but the wind was so strong it looked for a moment that the drone wouldn't be able to get back to us. It did eventually though when bought down to low altitude, but that was enough of a scare to call a halt to proceedings for that day.

We therefore retired to a pub to reconsider. This was the rather handsome Wagon and Horses built in 1669 and featuring in Pickwicks Papers.

We settled on a drive by of several others (apparently 18 have appeared in Wiltshire this summer), this being the most photographable.

We also passed an Iron Age hill fort, Barbury Castle...

...Avebury stone circles..

...Silbury Hill, an artificial chalk mound from prehistoric times, and the largest man made hill in Europe..

...and one of the white horses of Wiltshire.

After that, it was time for lunch, at none other than the crop circle themed pub, The Barge Inn..

..including Croppie label real ale...

..photos of notable local crop circles...

...and advertising crop circle evenings?

A copy of a newspaper feature article announced that crop circles were now worth millions to the economy. I guess we made a contribution!!!
