Camino del Norte - Day 16 - Llanes to Ribadasella - 30 km 17 km walked

A rest day for Meg and Mark so we headed off alone. The section was 30 km which we never intended to walk. There is a train running between the towns with a number of stops so we planned on walking to Nueva and training from there AGWWOG.

We left a little after 8 am, Julie sporting her new shoes...

First stop was the town of Poo!

Turned out to be quite a pleasant place really.

Then we followed the coast, with lovely beaches...

...to Celorio, which had a 16 th century pilgrim refuge..

...and where it was time for coffee.

Then past more beaches...

...a lovely church on an estuary...

...past the ruins of a monestary...

...and along shaded paths through woods..

...to yet another long open beach...

...and sea arches.

We then left the coast, walking along back roads. Way marking was hardly necessary on the blacktop, you just had to follow the scratch marks from the walking poles.

There were some lovely farmhouses..

And our first live frog!!

After 17 km we reached Nueva for lunch, then off to the train station...

..for the 13 km run into Ribadesella.

Here we are staying at the rather lovely, although a bit tired and dated, Hotel Marina....

...located on the river, with these views from our room.

WARNING, IF YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE FOOD, DON'T READ ON

For dinner we decided to go to the Michelin starred Arbidel Restaurant. We had a seven course degustation menu with matching wines for AUD 75 each!

Here we go..excuse the translations...marine and vegetable sensation

..squid in ink with pork toast...

...risotto with crab and shrimp pil pil...

..hake in lemongrass emulsion, with mushrooms, seaweed and sesame...

...roast duck with fig chutney, pineapple and mustard..

...and our first dessert only...pancake stuffed with cheese with a spicey hazelnut toffee candy and fig ice cream, served with an orange liqueur.

What more is there to say...
