Mekele to Lalibela 2630 m

Today we had a 10 hour drive south to Lalibela, considered the foremost place to visit in Ethiopia because of its 12 th to 13 th century stone churches carved out of rock, ie Ethiopias Petra. More of that later, this post is all about the drive.

Most of the following photos were taken from a moving car. The scenery and villages are ever changing but always engaging. What follows aims to provide an impression of the landscape we travelled through. Out of Mekele we were still at about 2000 m passing through farmland with mountain backdrops.

As we went further south, we started to reduce elevation and see a subtle change in country and village houses

The roads continued to be steep and windy and we passed quite a few crashed trucks such as this one laden with salt

At one point we passed a troop of Hamadryas baboons, another ancient monkey endemic to the Horn of Africa, also known as sacred baboons in ancient Egypt

We passed through several small towns with pretty basic houses

Passed lots of cattle on the move, the size of the horns on some were very impressive..

..and there were camels as well, here transporting sugarcane

We also took sly photos of the locals

Lunch was at a hotel in Woldia..

We then drove up to another plateau at about 3300 m and into yet another different landscape. This is looking back at where we climbed from

We entered open grassed plains with scattered villages grazing stock and farming

After that, more roller-coasting through lovely countryside..

..until nearing sunset..

...we arrived at the Panoramic View Hotel in Lalibela

Just in time to see the panoramic view
