We then headed to southern Ethiopia, two long days of driving. The first day was from Harar to Nazret, the the next to Arba Minch.
The most notable aspects of the drive to Nazret were truck crashes, this being the most spectacular, though we would pass maybe 10 a day.
We went through lots of villages, this ones economy was based on khat trading, and it was bustling
Nazret was just a stop over. We stayed at the Safari Lodge Hotel. It even had a pool!
...and before reaching Arba Minch we diverted up the side of the valley to the Guge mountains to visit Hayzo village. This is a Dorze people village. They are famous for their towering homes and textile weaving. We had a full village tour including a family compound and house
We saw cotton spinning
..and the making of their "bread" from false banana tree leaves. First the leaf is scraped to remove its pulp..
..the pulp is left to ferment underground..
...then it is rolled..
..and cooked.
We went to a communal house...
...and sampled the bread with both raw local honey and a spicy berbere sauce.
Of course there was plenty of textile for sale
