Day 11 to Myvatn

Today we head west to the “diamond circle” area of Iceland, staying on a dairy farm near Myvatn.

Cloudy but fine weather expected

First stop was Innra Hvannagil canyon just out of town. A colourful canyon with ryolite scree slopes and protruding basalt dykes.

There were also lovely flowers by the river

Including heather

And blueberries, bog bilberries, and crowberries with a partly clouded mountain backdrop. This type of cloud formation we saw often in our travels

We then had to go back to Skriouklauster as Ulla had left her glasses there. She treated us to skyr (yogurt) cake with berries

We then deviated off the main road through harsh dry stoney country to see an isolated old style turf farmhouse. The surprise was wonderful pancakes with home made jam and thick cream in the newer house of the same style.

We first had a picnic lunch huddled out of the wind

Then the pancakes and coffee

For interest, the handknitted local wool jumpers typically cost about $300.

Spoils of the hunt on the way to the restored old farmhouse

Our entertaining host Vidur with the house pets

The house itself looking something of a hobbit house. The walls were 4 ft thick.

Inside

Another drive through the same harsh country …

Next stop was Dettiflos waterfall, the falls with the greatest water flow in Europe

That was our last stop for the day. We headed to our accommodation for the night at Voga dairy farm near Myvatn, passing through a large geothermal area en route

Comfortable accommodation

They had cow stalls attached to the restaurant

The menu -$50 to $70 mains!

Lovely late evening light as we walked back to our rooms about 9:30 pm
