Day 9 to Egilsstadir

Today we move up the east coast travelling from Brunnhol to Egilsstadir

The weather again reasonably kind to us

First stop was Hofn, a fishing harbour town.

It is renown for its wetlands nature trail with associated shorebirds which we did. We saw eider ducks, pink footed geese, red throated loons, diving arctic terns, ringed plovers and dunlins, plus lots of wildflowers.

Golden moss (below)

The dunlins liked to perch on top of wild angelica

The tourist information office had amazing videos of the volcano eruptions, plus this lovely photo of a puffin

We passed the Hofn golf course and dropped in for a quick look. They generally play from the end of April to October. Other than then it is too dark!

Next stop was the Viking Cafe at Stokksnes for coffee and carrot cake.

This whole area is backed by mountains and 45 degree scree slopes. This area we nicknamed the rainbow scree

We continued driving along the east coast. Spectacular scenery, lots of sea birds including flocks of swans and huge numbers of guillemots.

We then entered Icelands fiordlands

In to the old port town of Djupivogur

A quick stop at  Stodvarfjordur for a visit to a rock collectors “garden”

Then on to our home for the night at Egilsstadir

Hotel Eyvindara

It was straight to the hot tub for some

We dined in town at Salt restaurant. A mid range place, though $30 pizzas, hamburgers and nachos and $50 calamari or ribs. Wine was $75 a bottle
