Belem and LX Factory

This morning we took the short train ride to Belém

First stop was the Antiga Confeiteria de Belém, aka Pasteis de Belém, the acknowledged founder of Portugese tarts, starting in 1827. There was a queue outside as always..

..and a busy front counter..

..but we went inside and got a table. We started with a Portugese tart each and a macchiato each..

..try and get that for less than $9 in Australia!..

..but of course we couldn't stop there and had another one each.

They had photos up of making the tarts in the old days..

..and a window showing the current operation. They sell over 22,000 Portugese tarts a day!!!! - there are 600 of them in the photo below

We then walked to Monasterio dos Jeronimos. Vasco de Gama is buried in the church, but unfortunately it was closed

We went to the river to see the Tower of Belem

..then walked along the Tagus river to the recommended LX Factory..

We started at the tower Padrao Dos Descobrimentos..

..passing the impressive Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology..

..and the Ponte de 25 Avril, with the prominent statue of Christo Rei across the river.

We also passed this tram station..

..and this I,pressingly facaded building..

..before entering the LX Factory - old warehouses rebirthed with funky shops and restaurants.

There was some excellent street art, including the bridge and statue we had just passed...

..this one a little different.

This sign caught our eye - they obviously haven't experienced an oyster and champagne breakfast!

We settled for burgers and chips. Julie got the dud order of a burger floating in what appeared to be a cold soup - soggy bread!!!

Freddie was happy being a tram driver - so much so he wasn't interested in sitting with us and eating.

We ate in the apartment, pizza and our own private wine tasting..

..followed by a selection of pastries.
