Knowarib - second day

While the rain missed us last evening, it certainly didn't miss the headwaters of the Hoanib. We were awoken at 3 am to a roaring river. At the small falls upstream, it looked like liquid chocolate.

We had a Himba village tour booked for the pm, and a free morning, so opted for a walk up the river to the canyon, There was quite good scenery along the way..

...and trees which looked like the ground had been washed away beneath them

Unfortunately, the river was too high for us to continue to the canyon proper..

...so we doubled back along the cliff line

There were some interesting trees and flowers..

..and a good view over the camping area.

The boys still had the donkey going providing plenty of hot water to the amenities block

We headed for the pool, where there were a number of birds coming and going, like this African red eyed bulbul..

..these red faced mousebirds (note the very long tail)...

..and this cape glossy starling.

Back to camp for jaffles and coffee..

..entertained by this pair of hornbills building a nest...

...lots of ground squirrels..

..and a beautiful little wren

THEN.. Heavy storm clouds rolled in. We were back at the pool and quickly scampered to the bar area. Huge winds with teeming horizontal rain, forced us out of the bar and huddling behind the reception wall. It lasted 45 mins. Managed to flip shut our rooftop tent and wet our sheets and mattress. The river started to rise. The village tour was called off, the afternoon was spent drying out our bedding.

We had arranged to have dinner at the resort restaurant. This called for a pre-dinner shower, with a new friend joining in.

Quite amazing after the turmoil of a few hours earlier to be sitting out having pre-dinner drinks around a firepit
