Free museum day

On the first Sunday of each month a wide range of museums in Paris offer free entry. With Wally having settled down again, but Pippa wanting a quiet day, it was an excellent opportunity for a day out for the (pending) grandparents. Our first target was the Pompadieu Centre - and specifically, the National Museum of Modern Art, the largest museum of modern art in Europe - interestingly lots of other people had the same idea! A 400m queue was a bit daunting bit it moved reasonably quickly...

..and we had bubble-man show to distract us.

We finally got inside, only to head up...

...and outside to the tube escalators...

..with unfolding views of the city and the ever present queue to get in.

We started on the 5th Floor, which traced the development of art for the mid 1800s. The collection was really broad, and included examples of most famous artists through those years. Such as Salvador Dali...

..Matisse..

..Picasso..

....plus Andy Warhols, Miros, etc etc with even Jackson Pollock getting a couple of spots...

..and this rather risqué one by Otto Dix

The displays weren't limited to art, there were movies, ceramics, and sculptures..

The views from that level were also quite impressive, with their steelwork framing..

...and from the 6th Floor, even better.

By now it was lunch time, and we had scoped out the best moules frites in Paris. It was nearby, so off to Leon de Bruxelles we went.

After that, time for one more museum, so we chose Musée Cluny - the museum of the Middle Ages.

Lots of tapestries, stained glass, sculptures, armaments and artworks from the 13th to 16th centuries

The piece de resistance is the Woman and the Unicorn series of tapestries from around the 1500s
