Nightingale Island

The original plan was for the ship to sail to Gough Island, a UNESCO world heritage site where landing is forbidden, to do a zodiac cruise to see in particular the colourful northern rockhopper penguins. However, Gough was an overnight sail away and the weather forecast was not good so it was decided to go to Nightingale Island and do a zodiac cruise there.

Approaching Nightingale Island

In the zodiacs

Tristan holiday huts

A greater shearwater

Southern sea lions, distinguishable by their pale necks

Northern rockhopper colony

A close-up, the feature the flambuoyany head feathers

Lichen coloured caves

Seal colony

More colourful sea cliffs

A southern sea lion and pup

Again fascinating sea caves

Heading back to the ship well satisfied
