Walking tours

Unlike most lodges, who only offer game drives, in the Okavango you can do walking tours on the islands, we did two, one on Buffalo Island and one on Lopis Island.

Typically it's a 6:00 am breakfast...

...then you set off by motor boat soon after sunrise.

There is generally a number of things to see on the way - wire tailed swallows..

..little bittern..

..go-away bird.

The landing on Buffalo Island

It was explained that the islands on the delta were all formed by termites. The termites start a mound, birds leave seeds on top, trees grow and the base expands. Below is an example.

The walking was quite easy. Very flat, and close single file required so the animals wouldn't recognise us as a threat

Carl was big on explaining everything to us, going as far as picking up a handful of elephant dung and pulling it apart to show us what they had been eating and how inefficient their digestion system is.

There were baboons..

..vervet monkeys...

..green headed parrots...

...kingfishers, this one a woodland kingfisher..

..Crimson breasted shrike..

..the remains of an impala in a tree, a leopard kill.

We approached some grasslands..

...where there were warthogs, and lechwe antelope.

We also checked out the plants, this milkweed..

..and an old buffalo horn infested with horn beetles, the only animal or insect that eats horn

This is a star apple, not particularly tasty

...and a blue pansy butterfly..

More birds, these a green wood hoopoe..

..and a colourful green pigeon

...a nicely posed pair of golden weavers, the male with a grub in his mouth..

..and then up close with one of the many elephants encountered.
