Saunders Island - The Falklands

Our final Falklands stop was Saunders Island, off the mid north coast of West Falkland Island, and again a privately owned sheep station.

This time there here was a visit map.

We landed on the SW beach at The Neck.

Home to thousands of Gentoo and Magellanic penguins.

But also with a small colony of King penguins.

There were examples of all stages of the breeding cycle. Birds with eggs..

...birds with very young chicks..

..and chicks of various ages.

There was a whale skeleton at the back of the beach....

....and the domestic and wild animals had no problem with each other.

Some Magellanics were still occupying their underground nests.

A walk east from The Neck, brought us to another mixed rockhopper and albatross colony..

Surprisingly there was one macaroni penguin with them.

On returning we saw a turkey vulture and caracaras feeding on a penguin that had been badly injured by a sea lion..

...they were subsequently joined by a giant petrel, no doubt about who was the boss.

The owners were selling some souvenirs from the back of their car. How could the girls miss a shopping opportunity!
