Motivated by a desire to visit South Georgia Island, we headed off to Argentina where we join a cruise from Ushuaia to Capetown, then visit Botswana and Namibia, before flying to Paris to catch up with Pippa, Adam and Freddie.
First stage was a flight to Buenos Aires with Air New Zealand, and we took the opportunity to pre-load in the American Express lounge at Sydney airport.
We had great views over the beaches as we left Australia..
..with a stop in Auckland en-route.
We are staying 3 nights in Buenos Aires, at the well located Tango de Mayo Hotel.
We arrived late in the afternoon, and, after settling in, it was off for some Argentinian beef at the highly rate Parilla Pena.
We had two full days to re-visit Buenos Airies. Day one we walked south from Avenida de Mayo to San Telmo and on to La Boca. 5 km each way, but plenty to see en-route. Eva Peron is well remembered..
...and there is lots of fascinating street art.
....particularly as we approached the San Telmo district
We diverted into the San Telmo market
..and one of the numerous Pasajes
On through Parque Lezama..
...to the very touristy La Boca....
...with many of the eateries having tango dancers associated with them.
...before walking back through Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo, where again tango dancers were being used to lure patrons to the restaurants.
After drinks on the rooftop bar at the hotel, we had dinner at a nearby Peruvian restaurant Chan Chan
A basic but tasty and plentiful ceviche for Bob
Day two we headed north to the Recoletta area. We passed Congreso - the Palace of the Argentine National Congress...
..a number of well loaded dog walkers..
..finally visiting Recoleta cemetery..
..including the main attraction, the grave of Eva Peron.
Lunch was at the upmarket Aramburu Bis restaurant..
..where we were even able to share desserts after impressive meat courses.
