North Lewis Circuit

A lovely sunny morning so we headed off to the northernmost point of Lewis - the Butt of Lewis

Interestingly, as we drove north the land became much flatter as seen by the photo below looking back towards North Harris

There were also interesting views of old crosting sections running down the slopes

We divided to stop and have a look at the Calanais standing stones, these were minor ones as we approached

The main ones were as impressive as any we have seen

We also visited the reconstructed “blackhouses” at Gearrannan. These were the traditional houses of Lewis

An early depiction of the village

They had a house set up in a traditional way. It was still occupied til 1974

And here we saw our first iris flower of the season having seen the stems everywhere for weeks

Lunch was at the North Dell community centre. Scotch broth and cheese scones!

Then it was on to the lighthouse at the Butt, ournorthernmost point for the whole trip at 58.5 degrees north

The sky was as impressive as the lighthouse

And there was a spectacular beach there

A quick look at Port Ness and we were off back home
