We drove across the island to do the 12 km Great Bernera loop walk, estimated to take 4 to 5 hours and including an Iron Age house and one of Lewis’s finest beaches.
The weather forecast might have put us off anywhere but Scotland - as they say you don’t come to Scotland for the weather! - so we pressed on
We crossed to Great Bernera island over a short bridge and were welcomed by this display board...
...and some standing stones.
This was the walk, we started on tarmac at Breaclete village
But were on trails after crossing this bridge...
..although this arch at the last house in the village required a touristy photo
We followed the western shore of the island with lots of photo opportunities
And nice stoney inlets
And this sole caterpillar
Plus a smattering of wildflowers
Lots of cotton grass
And this espaliered looking heather
Plus a different lapwing
Greylag geese
And more scenery
We passed through the fishing village of Tobson
And down a valley towards Bosta beach, wth old village ruins on the slopes
At the back of the beach there was a reconstructed Iron Age house, remnants of the same having been found at the site
Not really a beach day, but we could appreciate the potential
It was then back along a tarmac road to the car in light Scottish “mist”
