Time was up in Lochinver and the next stop was across the other side of Scotland at Inverness. It was another dismal day weather wise. We took an indirect route across hoping for some interesting stops.
It cleared a little as we neared the Black Isle region and we started passing lots of whisky distilleries. Being Sunday, most were closed but we dropped in for photos at a couple
Morning tea stop was in Tain, which had some nice old buildings
We then visited Nigg, in an attempt to see dolphins, but instead found oil rigs
Next was a visit and tour at the Glen Ord distillery, started by the Mackenzie clan in 1838
It was a one hour tour starting with the ingredients and their initially “mashing”
Here the wort is fermented to form the alcohol (starch to sugars to ethanol)
The impressive copper stills
The all important keg maturation
And there was a tasting of course
On for lunch at the Clatchabarry Pub on the outskirts of Inverness
On to our accommodation, a terrace on Argyle St
near the city centre
Enough time for a quick look around. Plenty of
advertising the Caledonian canal, the start (or finish) of which we had visited in Fort William a couple of weeks ago
Some nice buildings
And good views from the castle, which looks over the River Ness
The rain started again, so we retreated to our terrace for dinner.
