Mdina

Today was spent visiting Mdina. This was a fortified site from as long ago as 1000 BC when the Phoenicians built a protective wall and shelter. It was enlarged and strengthened by the Arabs in the 9th century and became the place of the nobles in the Middle Ages. It was the Knights of St John who abandoned it as their main fortress as they were sea going and needed forts on the coast, hence the building of Valletta.

We went by bus going through Naxxar, and Mosta.

Naxxar was home to the impressive Church of Our Lady

Mosta the Church of Santa Maria, or the Mosta Dome, the third largest unsupported dome in the world

No mistaking Mdina as we approached

The main gate

Plenty of lovely buildings etc as we strolled the narrow streets

Opulent church/monastery interiors

And lunch with a view at a restaurant with a terrace on top of the ramparts
